San Francisco International Arts Festival Presents Annual Gathering Featuring Artists from 10 Countries

San Francisco International Arts Festival Presents Annual Gathering Featuring Artists from 10 Countries

San Francisco, California (PRWEB) February 02, 2012

The Ninth Annual San Francisco International Arts Festival (SFIAF) will kick off on May 2 with more than 40 performances being presented at multiple venues throughout the city. With its annual theme, The Truth in Knowing/Now: Threads in Time, Place, Culture, SFIAF 2012 will include World Premieres, US Debuts & International Collaborations featuring leading artists from the Bay Area performing alongside their peers from around the world. This year’s festival includes dance, music and theatre with events taking place at the Marines Memorial Theatre, Herbst Theatre, Yerba Buena Gardens andthe Southside Theatre. SFIAF 2012 will feature artists from the Bay Area, Southern Californiaand the countries of Colombia, Cuba, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Iran, Japan, the Netherlands, Russia, and Switzerland.

Headlining

Somewhat uncharacteristically for SFIAF, both of the headlining companies in 2012 are practitioners of traditional arts. Eighty-year-old National Living Treasure of Japan, Mansaku Nomura will lead his Mansaku-no-Kai Company to the United States for a two-city tour. The performance, which will consist of traditional theatre works from the 600 year-old kyogen tradition, will be the company’s first appearance in San Francisco since Nomura’s son Mansai starred in A Kyogen of Errors in 2005. Presented with the US/Japan Cultural Trade Network, Mansaku-no-Kai’s only other US performances will be at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.

The slightly younger but just as venerable Juan De Dios Ramos Morejon, artistic director of the legendary Afro-Cuban ensemble Raices Profundas, will also be at the head of his company for what will be their much anticipated (if somewhat delayed for nearly 35 years) US debut at SFIAF as a co-presentation with PlazaCUBA.

Dance

A fascinating program of contemporary dance will be led by four American companies participating in international collaborations. Choreographer Leyya Tawil of Dance Elixir in collaboration with composer and engineer Lars J. Brouwer of the Netherlandswill present the world premiere of THIEVES that raised a good deal of interest when seen as a work-in-progress at SFIAF 2011. THIEVES will be performed as part of a shared bill with Companie 7273 from Switzerland who will present the US Premiere of LISTEN & WATCH (2006) created and performed by the company’s co-artistic director, Laurence Yadi and Nicolas Cantillon and performed by Cantillon and award winning American guitarist, Sir Richard Bishop.

Former San Francisco choreographer Cid Pearlman will return to SFIAF to present the Bay Area premiere of This is What We Do in Winter created in 2010 in Estonia with an ensemble of five American and Estonian dancers and original music by Jonathan Segal. Pearlman will share the stage with

Post:Ballet who will present Mine Is Yours, a world premiere collaboration featuring Post:Ballet artistic director, choreographer Robert Dekkers and composer Daniel Berkman, questions our assumptions about monogamy, sexual orientation, family dynamics, infidelity and marriage. Finally the program will include the Susanna Leinenon Company who will present the US Premiere of the Finnish choreographer’s signature work Chinese Objects (2005).

AXIS Dance Company will continue their successful collaboration with the Marc Brew Company from England with the San Francisco premiere of Full of Words that Brew set on AXIS in 2011 alongside mixed repertory from both companies (TBD).

Tinged with nostalgia, memories and Bay Area folklore and history, Yaelisa & Caminos Flamencos will present Homenage a los Flamencos de la Bodega, a multi-generational production that is a tribute to the founders and creators of the legendary Cuevas Room, which was located at the Olde Spaghetti Factory in North Beach. This production honors the founders and creators and provides a historical perspective of the importance of this proving ground for flamenco and the lasting impact that it had (and continues to have) on flamenco in North America.

SFIAF 2012 will also see the return of Ko Murobushi and inkBoat with The Crazy Cloud Collection, an evening-length piece inspired by the life of Ikkyu Sojun that was originally co-produced by SFIAF, inkBoat and the US/Japan Cutural Trade Network and premiered at the Festival in 2010. The performances will mark the finale of a US tour supported by the National Dance Project and the Japan Foundation.

Music

SFIAF’s longest presenting partners, the Earplay Ensemble will present an international program of experimental contemporary music including the world premiere of Along the River During the Qingming Festival, by Chinese Composer Joan Huang in collaboration with Melody of China and the US Premiere of Strom (2010) by Germany’s Sven Daigger.

Theatre

In addition to Mansaku no Kai, SFIAF 2012 will see the US debut of Max Theatre of Iran (a co-presentation with Golden Thread Productions) and the west coast debut of Liquid Theatre from Moscow, Russia. Max Theatre will present a Persian language version of Macbeth by the company’s upcoming artistic director, Reza Servati. The riveting and surrealist production has been acclaimed by theatre audiences throughout the Middle East & Europe and won the Special Jury Prize at the Fajr Fajr Festival and Best Performance at the Tehran International Festival of University Theatre.

Moscow’s Liquid Theatre will perform their award winning physical theatre performance Antidot (Antidote, 2009) a humorous physical theatre reflection on the restrictions and confinements of life working in an office. The antidote to the situation is perhaps closer to a California new age experience than the audience might expect–more in common with a practice in the Berkeley Hills than Moscow’s industrial hinterland. Liquid Theatre will also be among the featured performers at the 200th Anniversary Celebrations of Fort Ross, founded by emissaries of Alexander I of Russia in 1812.

Stilt walking and other extraordinary uses of the appendages will feature prominently at SFIAF’s free theatre program to be presented in collaboration with the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival. Pioneering street theatre company Teatro Taller de Columbia will present the US Premiere of Exodo that focuses on issues of exile and displacement and the Carpetbag Brigade will perform the San Francisco premiere of Callings (2011) that poses the question, “If the ocean was ill, what would she say and how would she say it?”

Finally, SFIAF will present the US premiere of White Rabbit, Red Rabbit by Iranian playwright, Nassim Soleimanpour. Soleimanpour cannot leave Iran because he refuses to do military service (and is therefore not eligible to apply for a passport), but in his absence he has sent us a script that will be performed by a different Bay Area actor at each performance. Each actor will receive the script in a sealed envelope to be read and performed for the first time with the audience present.

Executive director, Andrew Wood said of this year’s event, “We are tremendously excited by the 2012 program. It has been over two and a half years in the making and we are very pleased with the results. I would like to thank the artists, our presenting partners and the numerous foundations, sponsors and governments who have worked with us over this protracted period to raise the money to bring the 2012 festival to fruition.”

Educational Activities

In addition to performing, most artists featured at SFIAF will give master classes or workshops at the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance as part of their engagement at the Festival.

Franklin and Marshall College Cycling Team Hosting 24-Hour Cycle-A-Thon for ?Racing To Register?

Franklin and Marshall College Cycling Team Hosting 24-Hour Cycle-A-Thon for “Racing To Register”

Lancaster, PA (PRWEB) January 25, 2012

The Franklin and Marshall College Elite Cycling team is hosting its first 24 hour indoor Cycle-A-Thon this weekend to raise money for “Racing to Register” (http://www.racingtoregister.org) — the Pennsylvania non-profit founded to inspire people to join the Be The Match Registry (formerly National Bone Marrow Donor Registry.)

The students will begin cycling this Friday, January 27th at 4:00 p.m. and continue through Saturday, January 28th at 4:00 p.m. in the Steinman College Center. Members of the cycling team are raising money through pledges and will take turns riding their racing bikes on indoor stationary trainers as a continual relay for 24 hours.

Racing to Register was founded in 2011 by F&M alum Tom Kramer. Tom’s wife Pam was diagnosed in 2009 with a rare form of Leukemia and needs a bone marrow donor. Using endurance sports as a platform, Tom (F&M Class of 1989) undertook the mission of completing a marathon, two half Ironman triathlons and one full Ironman race in one year to inspire others to join the Registry. Today, RTR is a Pennsylvania non-profit corporation which has registered over 1,300 people and has facilitated two potential patient matches for patients.

“The cycling team has a long standing relationship with Racing to Register and its founder Tom Kramer,” notes F&M Team President Robert Burnett. “Tom is an active triathlete, cyclist and supporter of our team. He has educated all of us on the importance of joint the registry, and giving back to the community. We are thrilled to be holding this cycle-a-thon which will become an annual event.”

Tom Kramer, founder of Racing to Register adds “we are thrilled that the F&M team has decided to support us in this way. Young people age 18-25 joining the registry is a critical base of potential donors, so this is a very important demographic for us to reach. We encourage everyone to come out support the cycling team and, most importantly, join the Be The Match Registry.”

Currently there are only 10,000 people on the national registry; RTR has registered approximately 2,000 people since 2009.

For more information on how you can help visit, http://www.RacingToRegister.org.

About Racing to Register

Racing to Register inspires people to join the national bone marrow registry, using endurance sports as a platform. RTR also operates two programs, TEAM RTR which allows anyone to participate in select endurance events including marathons and triathlon, while raising funds and awareness as well as RTR Cares which was formed in partnership with the Ronald McDonald House in order to grant wishes to families or children being treated for blood cancer diseases and preparing or recovering from marrow or cord blood transplants.

About the Franklin and Marshall College Cycling Team

In 2008, the team was born and consisted of a small roster enthusiastic about bike racing. They had a successful two seasons, and were growing to be a strong group. Last year, the team was acknowledged as a small but extremely powerful team that “should be watched” as a potential top team in the Eastern Collegiate Cycling Conference. At one point, they were crawling up as a top 5 team, “a goal”, said by many on the team, “that surpassed their expectations.” The F&M Cycling Team finished 9th out of the 53 or so teams in the ECCC. Currently they are training for their upcoming season with a roster that has nearly doubled in size. “We’re ready,” says Ryan McKenna, a teammate entering his second season with the team. “We’re a threat now to any top 5 team and that’s something we’re going to take seriously this season.”

Apl.de.Ap – We Can Be Anything [OFFICIAL VIDEO] with Lyrics

Follow: twitter.com news updated about the group Black Eyed Peas WeCanBeAnything is an education advocacy campaign, born of a partnership between the Apl.de.Ap Foundation (AdAF) and the Ninoy and Cory Aquino Foundation (NCAF). The campaign was conceived after apl.de.ap (aka Allan Pineda), the Filipino-American member of the world-famous Black Eyed Peas, expressed his desire to help improve the education situation in the Philippines. From his own experience, he knew that, for many Filipinos mired in poverty or other difficult circumstances, education is the only long-term ticket to a better life. Unfortunately, millions among the youth are deprived of this ticket to opportunity or drop out of school for a variety of reasons. One basic obstacle is the severe shortage of public school classrooms; the Department of Education (DepEd) estimates the backlog at 66800 classrooms as of schoolyear 2010-2011, Another factor is the barren environment for learning in many parts of the country due to scarce resources with which to set up libraries and similar facilities. Several organizations have launched programs to address these and many other problems besetting the Philippine educational system. Through his foundation, apl.de.ap wants to be able to help some of these programs. On a personal level, he simply wants to tell young Filipinos that he was able to go so far in life because he got an education. To deliver this message, he has composed the song, “We Can Be Anything”, around

Parent Education Programs for Divorce in Minnesota

education programs
by The U.S. National Archives

Article by Vincent Martin

Parent Education Programs for Divorce in MinnesotaIn all divorce proceedings in Minnesota where there are contested issues of custody and/or parenting time, the parties are required to participate in a “parent education program.” Additionally, in some counties within Minnesota, so long as the children are over the age of 7, the minor children may also be required to participate in their own programs which are designed for children whose parents are going through a divorce proceeding. This education requirement also exists for the unmarried parents of minor children when the parents are involved in a contested paternity or custody proceeding. There are many different providers who offer these programs. You can either contact Court Administration for your particular county to ask for more information, or you may be able to find information about the various programs on the Court’s website. Depending upon the size of the county, and the resources available, there are often multiple classes offered which may address different types of divorce or parenting issues. In general, the goal of the programs is to advise the parents that it is in their children’s best interests for the parents to cooperate and communicate and make decisions jointly which will benefit the children. If the parties are going through a divorce, there may also be education programs available which may offer information regarding the financial aspects of the divorce, including child support, valuation and division of assets, and spousal maintenance. Once you have completed the program, you receive a “Certificate of Completion”, which you can file with the Court to confirm that you have complied with the program requirement. If you are a party to a divorce proceeding, or a custody/parenting time proceeding, and you have been able to reach a full agreement with the other parent regarding the issues of custody and parenting time, it is sometimes within the Court’s discretion to waive the program requirement. However, if the Court is not waiving the education requirement, it is possible that your divorce decree and/or custody decree may not be entered by the Court until both parents have complied with the education requirement. New National Project: Families with Disabilities Across the Lifespan

New National Project: Families with Disabilities Across the Lifespan

Berkeley, CA (PRWEB) December 15, 2011

New National Project: Families with Disabilities Across the Lifespan

Research, training and resources concerning the 21 million U.S. families with disabilities

December 15, 2011. Through the Looking Glass and its National Center for Parents with Disabilities was awarded a five-year 2.5 million dollar federal grant to conduct research, training and provide consultations and materials regarding families in which an infant, child, parent or grandparent has a disability. In the United States, it is estimated that 28.9% of families (20.9 million families) have at least one member with a disability: 3.9 % of families have at least one child with a disability and 6.1% of families with children have one or both parents with a disability (American Community Survey, 2008-2009).

This new national project titled “Families with Disabilities through the Life Cycle: Disability Culture Perspectives” is funded by the National Institute on Disability Rehabilitation and Research, U.S. Department of Education. Over the next five years, project activities will focus on critical issues that impact families with disabilities across the lifespan: from those disabled and nondisabled parents who are at the initial stages of having an infant with a disability through children with disabilities growing up to parents and grandparents with disabilities. In keeping with Through the Looking Glass’ 30 years of groundbreaking research, training and clinical intervention work, project activities will address family members with diverse disabilities and draw from the experiences and perspectives of the Disability and Deaf communities. Among the innovative activities planned are:

Free consultations to parents, family members and professionals regarding families with disabilities across the lifespan.
Research regarding national statistics, discriminatory practices and appropriate resources for families with disabilities.
Training and resource materials for more than 2,000 Early Head Start programs and Independent Living Centers throughout the U.S. regarding parents with disabilities or deafness and their children.
Legal research and consultations for parents with disabilities involved in custody situations.
Scholarships for high school seniors and college students who have a parent with a disability
Training and tools for occupational therapists to support parents with disabilities
Expertise to inform federal and international policies regarding the rights of parents with disabilities.
Research regarding innovative techniques to help parents with intellectual disabilities be more responsive to their babies.
Online reviews of equipment and adaptations designed to help grandparents with disabilities care for their grandchildren.
Trainings to professionals from Japan regarding services to infants and families with disabilities.

The project will be staffed by TLG’s nationally recognized experts regarding families with disabilities, most of whom have personal or family experience with disability or deafness.

About the Organization:

Through the Looking Glass (TLG) grew out of the independent living or civil rights movement for people with disabilities, and is the most experienced disability culture-based organization providing early intervention to enhance the potential of infants, children and families with disabilities. TLG has pioneered clinical and supportive services, training, consultation, resources, and research serving families with disability issues. Since its founding as a non-profit organization in 1982, TLG has served culturally diverse families in which an infant, child, parent or parenting grandparent has a disability, developmental or medical issue. Since 1993 TLG has been federally funded as the only national center for parents with disabilities and their children, providing technical assistance, publications and training to parents and professionals from all U.S. states and 50 countries. In 2010 TLG was funded as a model Early Head Start program specializing in center and home-based services to families with disabilities. TLG and its Early Head Start are part of the Ed Roberts Campus at the Ashby BART station in Berkeley, California, a “one-stop shop” multi-agency environment for individuals and families with disabilities—dedicated to disability rights and universal access (see http://www.edrobertscampus.org for more details). The Problems With Special Education In Cebu

special education
by Riksarkivet (National Archives of Norway)

Article by Soul Captive

Although there is no denying the fact that the city of Cebu is fast becoming the central hub for various business and commercial ventures in the Philippines, it is sad to note that there are major things that the city and its residents have failed to work on. One of which involves the concerns and overall welfare of people, especially children with special needs.Special education in Cebu definitely needs a lot of work to be done.

Special education is one of the many aspects of the education system across the globe. Technically, it involves the education process of students with special needs, with ample consideration of every student’s individual differences and needs. Despite how simple it sounds, the entire matter is of great complexity. It makes use of systematic, tested procedures to ensure that a students special needs are duly met.

Special needs occupy a large spectrum of assistance needed by individuals who have disabilities that can be medical, mental or psychological in nature. These can include minor learning disabilities to more serious cases that involve inability to function efficiently and proceed with the Activities of Daily Life.

At the present, at least 150, 000 children in the United States are in need of special education services. More than 155, 000 Canadian kids have special needs in 2001. In the Philippines though, there is no clear number representing this part of the population. This is the start of the problem.

In the US, Canada and other first-world locations, having special needs is not a problem at all. There are various organizations that are constantly working to promote awareness of this situation and further help these kids and their parents in dealing with the whole ordeal. In fact, the government itself has taken responsibility over these children by providing for most, if not all, of their needs. Parents are able to get the assistance that they need for their offsprings.

In the Philippines, it is completely a different thing. For one, the parents themselves have a problem with the idea of having kids that they consider to be abnormal. It is very painful for them to see that their own offspring are not able to do what the regular kids do. Because of this, they fail to face the reality. As a result, their kids do not get the proper diagnosis and possible professional help that they need. Although the more modern Filipino parents nowadays are starting to realize the value of acceptance and early intervention in dealing with these conditions, majority of the population still succumb to the traditional way of thinking.

The next problem with special education in Cebu goes back to the country’s largest loophole. The government itself is not exerting ample effort to help out with this problem. If only the Philippine government can do what the US and Canadian governments have been able to do for their citizens with special needs, more can surely be done for these people. Promoting special education in Cebu is just one of the primary steps that can be done make more people more knowledgeable about this situation.

The Landmark Education Program

education programs
by The U.S. National Archives

Article by Adams Nelson

Whenever two people are bound together by marriage they always receive the “marriage is not a bed of roses” speech; well in the practical sense life in general is not a bed of roses since troubles and hardships are everywhere we go and we can’t avoid them the best option is to learn how to deal with them. Landmark education gives us the opportunity; the course focuses on equipping you with ample tools to face all your problems and ensures a smooth stable life. Most people leave miserable lives simply because they do not know how to deal with their problems strategically but instead succumb to them leading to a life full of depression and misery. These are the things that may hinder you from reaching your full potential and drastically lower your self esteem.

You may choose to face these problems in several ways; going into the landmark education program is one of them. The first introductory course in the landmark education program is called the landmark forum. This part of the program focuses on the self development of an individual by a method known as self reflection. The approach basically involves looking at your life and identifying what is wrong, that is the various hindrances that are preventing your happiness thus blocking you from reaching your full potential. Once the hindrances are identified, the course will focus on helping you to get rid of the current problems and will further teach you how to deal with future problems.

The landmark education program has been divided into four different parts, each of which has been strategically placed to ensure the success of the entire program. These are Landmark Forum, Landmark Seminar, Landmark Advanced Course and Landmark Self Expression and Leadership Program. The first part, which is the landmark forum, is the most important and it is also the most basic of all the parts since it covers the ground basics of self improvement and that is forming quality relationships, improving personal overall performance and experiencing the joys life has to offer.

The landmark education program is not restricted to individuals, some corporate use it as a means of improving their employee’s productivity, a company’s performance is highly determined by their employees performance therefore focusing on the well being of the employees is a sure way of achieving success by meeting the set goals. There is a special type of landmark forum where the employees from a specific company are taught together and the course is specified at rooting out problems facing the company as a unit. The landmark education program has been credited all around the world as a strategic means for success by both individual people and corporate clients have reaped the benefits of achieving full potential within them. It is therefore a means to consider if you are trying to break whichever barriers that might be holding you down and preventing you from reaching that maximum level of growth that you know you are capable of deep within.

Criminal Justice Online Education Programs: Convenient and Comprehensive

education programs
by Smithsonian Institution

Article by Terry Edwards

If you have an interest in Criminal Justice but are concerned about how the required education would “fit your life” then consider an online program. The path to obtaining a degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice has never been easier.

Criminal justice online education programs offer the best opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills needed for professional growth in this type of field. Whether you are currently a college student or a working professional, you will enjoy the many benefits of an online education.

When taking online courses you will be “in class” with students from other parts of the nation. This diversity adds a new dimension to “class discussions” that greatly enhances the learning experience. Online students have the opportunity to discuss and compare their local crime data with others that live many miles away.

In some programs the students build PowerPoint presentations on the criminal activity in their local area. These presentations can be very detailed and include such information as maps and census research. As the presentations are shared with “classmates” the students are afforded the opportunity to learn about communities from across the nation. The real advantage to this “collection and sharing” of information is that the students gain a much broader understanding of our Criminal Justice System. An online education in criminal justice is usually preferred by non-traditional students. This could be anyone that does not fit the typical profile of a college student. A high percentage of online students are employed full-time and have family obligations. Many are professionals.

The online Criminal Justice Degree Programs allow students to complete their entire degree from home – without visits to the campus. This provides for personal convenience which can ultimately assist students in being more successful in the completion of the degree.

If you are proficient with the computer, disciplined in time management and have strong organizational skills distant learning will work for you. Many adults return to school to keep up with the skills and knowledge required to be competitive in the modern marketplace. With so many professions requiring an educational background as opposed to “experience” it is expected that the trend toward ‘returning to school’ will be on the increase for years to come.

Online education affords the students time to continue enjoying their current life(style) while earning the education necessary to continue a rewarding career. The same degree and benefits enjoyed by students in the on-campus program are provided to the students in the online program. An online education in criminal justice will give you the tools needed to succeed, all delivered in a convenient and comprehensive format.

If you have an interest in pursuing a career in Criminal Justice consider the advantages of an online education. You will save time and inconvenience because you will not be required to “attend” classes on campus. You will enjoy the diversity made possible by the various locations of the students. Your life will not be completely disrupted. And you will learn in a comprehensive design that will deliver the degree you desire.

International Trade Education Programs (ITEP) Founder Carol Rowen Selected for Stanley T. Olafson Bronze Plaque Award at FTA Event

Article by George S. Mc Quade III @ MAYO Communications

“Whoa, I can’t believe it,” said Founder & CEO Carol Rowen, International Trade Education Programs (ITEP) when her named was called out as the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce’s 2009 Winner of the 76th Stanley T. Olafson Bronze Plague Award recently at The 83rd Foreign Trade Association Annual World Trade Week Luncheon & Trade Fair.

“I would not be here today if it were not for the Port of Los Angeles and the international trade industry and others who have support our growing organization over the years,” said a teary-eyed Rowen. “There are a lot of people who have faith in what we are trying to do for economically challenged high school students.”

Keynote Speaker Derek Shearer, chevalier professor of Diplomacy & World Affairs, Occidental College, Los Angeles, congratulated Rowen during his address to about 300 plus attendees. “The Foreign Trade Association should put more pressure on California, the City of LA, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and the LAUSD board to include international trade as part of the regular curriculum, and not in just two or three high schools, but all of them. ITEP is doing a good job,” Shearer said, noting that many graduating students lack education on International Trade and the world around them.

Carol Rowen, a longtime activist and businesswoman, founded the International Trade Education Program in 1999. The non-profit organization introduces high school students to careers in maritime trade, transportation and logistics.

Speaking of international trade, Shearer said: “(The North American Free Trade Agreement) will not be renegotiated, and don’t worry about free trade with Columbia or Panama right now, most of those deals are political rewards. President Obama’s number one priority is getting the country out of a recession. Obama, who got his education at Occidental College in California, has a new foundation. He is working on health care reform and retooling the auto industry, which both will impact international trade.”

ITEP programs assess the needs of the high school and the surrounding transportation, logistics and industry needs. Schools with which ITEP has worked with have needed to boost graduation rates, decrease dropout rates, and enhance standardized test scores. Even those students who did graduate from these struggling schools rarely had opportunities or motivation to pursue further education or employment. ITEP helps design programs to fulfill those needs.

Rowen noted that, transportation and logistics industries suffer from a shortage of qualified workers along the hubs and arteries of international trade a big part of the nation’s economic driver.International Trade Education Programs (ITEP) is amongst scores of nonprofits and charities that rely on donations for operation. ITEP, a 501C nonprofit, offers economically disadvantaged students educational opportunities and experiences not offered in their schools or neighborhoods.

Through ITEP, Rowen unites business professionals, educators and parents in establishing international trade academies to help meet the needs of the expanding maritime trade industry while providing exceptional opportunity to economically underserved students. A model program is active at Banning High School in Wilmington with newly formed academies in Carson, Barstow, San Pedro and Oakland. Rowen is also co-developer of an international trade certification program for high school students to be available to California graduating seniors. Rowen currently serves on the Board of Governors for the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC) for which she is also a member of its Transportation, Workforce Development, and World Trade Center Committees. She also sits on advisory boards for Cal State Dominguez Hills, UCLA Extension, and Santa Monica College.

“We’re like a small business, every dollar donated to ITEP is the key to our survival,” explained Rowen. “Large and small companies are going to think twice about donating to charity and they keep our organization running to help students beat the odds.”

Online Degrees in Special Education

special education
by OSU Special Collections & Archives

Article by chris cornell

As the name indicates online degree in special education is geared towards preparing worthy teachers who are willing to polish their skills and desirous to make career in special education (usually students with special education needs and requirements). Needless to say, making career in this field is quite challenging as teachers need to take care of their students with special educational needs. Unlike other regular teachers this job demands a lot more from mentors and teachers but when it comes to rewards and remunerations they can expect much better salary packages and other benefits.

There are many types of courses available in special education programs, such as Master of Arts and Bachelor of Arts in education or special education. Most courses are designed to train young and aspiring minds based on Response to Intervention (popularly known as RTI) techniques as most students would have special needs to be addressed by them. Depending upon your convenience and choice you can choose a particular type of program from various programs available. Most universities and schools, such as St. Joseph University, University of Phoenix, Ashford University, Liberty University amongst several others. For eligibility criteria, selection procedure and fee details you must check with the relevant website carefully and in case of any doubt you must speak to them personally before getting yourself enrolled.

Another important point in this type of education is that you must possess special personality traits and bent of mind so that you can enjoy working with students with special needs and disabilities. If you think you have such qualities and temperament to handle such students and you are self motivated, well organized, cool minded, able to motivate others and able to understand those who need you, then there is a great news that there are thousands of vacancies available even in the US itself. In US all states require that you must be licensed to train children with special needs. Some states require you to have a bachelor

special education teacher vs administration

special education teacher advocating for her right to teach children vs do paperwork all day

Part 4 of the CNN special “Education in America: Don’t Fail Me,” featuring FRC Team 842, 1403, and 3675, reported by Soledad O’Brien. CNN description: In “Don’t Fail Me: Education in America”, we learn that at this very moment, America’s future is at stake. “If we don’t generate the next group of innovators, scientists, engineers, and problem solvers,” inventor Dean Kamen warns, “our standard of living, our quality of life, our security, will plummet!” American students rank 17th in science and 25th in math when compared to other industrialized nations. They don’t have the skills to take on the high tech jobs of the future. This is because of how and what we teach American kids. It is also because of a culture that values sports and celebrities above all. The United States needs to change the way students are taught math and science, and children need to be encouraged and inspired to take the toughest classes in those subjects. There is a nationwide competition designed to motivate high school students to take those classes, push themselves, and learn more. Students Maria Castro, Brian Whited and Shaan Patel are actively involved in it. But is it too late for them? Is it too late for us?
